Symi was once one of the most prosperous of the Greek
Islands. Decline in the traditional occupations of sponge fishing
and boat building together with the annexation and occupation of the
Dodecanese Islands resulted in severe depopulation. Many of the fine
neo-classical buildings fell into decay and some are still in ruins.
With income generated by tourism the population is again increasing
and buildings are being restored.
